This week's top stories

Streem Leading News Stories - 30 November - noon 6 December

1. Keeping it in the family… - Hunter Biden, who had been convicted of federal tax and gun charges, was granted a presidential pardon by his father this week. Joe Biden said his son was 'selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted', and 'treated differently', so it was a fair course of action. Donald Trump - also a convicted criminal - had a bit to say about that via his lawyers this week…

2. A short-lived fee change for Commbank … - If Australia’s largest bank thought shifting its ‘Complete Access’ customers to ‘Smart Access’ accounts (where they would be charged a $3 fee to withdraw money from a teller) would go unnoticed, well, here we are… The plan has been shelved for a bit.

3. Noticed some shortages on Woolies’ shelves? - Speaking of big companies in the spotlight… The United Workers Union has been picketing Woolworths’ distribution centres in NSW and Victoria over a pay dispute - it wants a 25% wage rise without productivity gains, and the supermarket giant has said nah to that… Yesterday, the Fair Work Commission ruled that the union is behaving unlawfully, but it’s not clear what’s next.

4. A short-lived constitutional crisis in South Korea - This was a bit out of the blue… President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in the country after accusing his political opponents of “anti-state activities plotting rebellion”. His parliamentary colleagues - including those from his own party - were not happy and called it off, and Yoon is now under pressure to resign

5. A vote in support of Israel getting out of the Palestinian Territories - Australia was one of 157 nations to vote in support of the United Nations General Assembly resolution this week, but it was notable because it is a change in direction for us… Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said the “flip-flop” was “disappointing”.

S’Quiz me real good…

Picture of the Week

As mentioned, widespread protests demanding President Soon Suk Yeol's resignation are ongoing across South Korea. Hot tip: they’re expected to be big this weekend…

Question of the week

Singalong or shoosh?

The majority has it - Team Shoosh it is. As expected, there was some healthy debate in the comments…

It’s a solution - “Dedicated singalong sessions exist for a reason.”

Snap - “I go to a musical to listen to the performers, not necessarily the other people who think they can sing…”

Let them lean in - “What’s the point of going to a musical if you can't tap, clap or sing?”

Squiz Recommends

Buying - Rumour has it that Tupperware is closing down in Australia. As fans, we were feeling a bit nostalgic and went straight to the icy pole moulds…

Reading - This one is a bit left field, but stay with us… It’s a piece from professional wrestler Ettore ‘Big E’ Ewen, who’s in recovery from breaking his neck. He writes about self-acceptance, black culture, and how to deal with bad thoughts. It’s a well-written piece.

Watching - We’ve just finished watching The Day of the Jackal on Binge. It’s a funny and relatively clever spy series starting Eddie Redman and Lashana Lynch. All the episodes are available to watch now, and they go to about 45 minutes… It’s the perfect series to sink your teeth into this time of year.
