1. Labor’s landslide - There are so many ways to say ‘Labor won, the Liberals lost, the Greens tanked in the House of Reps, and the Teals held on’. It was a result for the ages… All eyes are on how the Liberals rebuild after a record-setting defeat, and there’s a particular focus on how (or rather, if…) they will build bridges with women.
2. We have a pope - He’s American - and holds Peruvian citizenship. He’s a recent appointment to the Vatican by Pope Francis. He’s partial to a weekly game of tennis… Meet Pope Leo XIV.
3. Can’t buy thy neighbour - Canada’s PM Mark Carney has made his first visit to the White House to meet with US President Donald Trump since being election in April - but he’s not kissing the ring. Though keeping things civil, the PM explained his country’s position using Trump’s own language - real estate - insisting Canada is not for sale.
4. A tragedy in Harristown - We didn’t cover this one this week, but it dominated the headlines in Queensland on Wednesday morning. Three children have died after a house fire in Toowoomba, with their 36yo mother under police guard at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
5. Gone bench hopping - Adding to the Coalition’s political disarray, the CLP’s senator from Alice Springs Jacinta Nampijinpa Price has announced she’s jumping ship to sit with the Liberal Party, saying she’ll be “more effective” there. The Coalition is set to meet in Canberra this Tuesday to elect a new party leader.

Tuesday - In New York this morning, opening statements will be heard in the criminal trial of music mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering - it's expected to last up to 8 weeks. Over in France, the Cannes International Film Festival begins, with new films from directors Wes Anderson and Ari Aster.
Wednesday - Set your alarms, the Semi Final 1 of Eurovision kicks off at 5am, with WA’s Milkshake Man Go-Jo hoping to prove why on earth Australia participates in a European song contest… Watch that on SBS on Demand. Also, Olympic cyclist Rohan Dennis will face sentencing over the death of his wife and fellow Olympian Melissa Hoskins.
Thursday - Nakba Day marks the anniversary of the beginning of the Arab-Israeli war when the Palestinian population were expelled from their land. It’s one to clock because US President Donald Trump will be on a 3-day visit to the region
Friday - It’s a quick turnaround - the Eurovision Semi Final 2 is back on at 5am (with the grand final on Sunday morning our time). And Aussie Oscar Piastri is set to light up the track in the Italian F1 in the qualifying rounds (and the race is late Sunday night our time) - watch on Kayo.
