Customise your routine with Go-To Skincare

This week's top stories

Streem Leading News Stories - 5-11 October

1. More dark days around a grim anniversary - Israel’s PM Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the nation on Monday, reiterating Israel’s war goals. He’s not backing down, declaring the country is facing a 7-front war… And after almost 2 months, US President Joe Biden and Netanyahu had a call to discuss Israel’s intended retaliation to Iran’s missile strike last week - but a ceasefire is a long way off it seems.

2. Thar he blows… - Floridians are picking up the pieces after Hurricane Milton made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane and ripped through the state as a Category 1 storm before moving offshore. It’s the flooding from all the rain that’s the next problem… Officials say at least 16 people have died with the damage set to be in the billions.

3. A Storm that came off second best… - It’s 4 premierships in a row for the Penrith Panthers, who took down the Melbourne Storm in last Sunday’s NRL Grand Final 14-6. Love was also the winner on the night thanks to Matilda Mary Fowler’s social media post about her star player boyf’ Nathan Cleary…

4. A local spin on escalating tensions in the Middle East - This was in the news a lot over last weekend and Monday… Israel’s focus on Hezbollah has brought out thousands of pro-Palestinian protestors in Melbourne and Sunday - and with Monday’s anniversary, there were concerns about what might go down. These themes also boiled over in Federal Parliament this week…

5. All their people right here right now, d’ya know what they mean? - Yeah yeah… That’s our lame attempt at bringing the lyrics of an Oasis hit to the announcement that their Aussie tour dates in October and November next year are set… Tickets go on presale on Monday (which is too late to apply for…) before the official general sale on Tuesday.

S’Quiz me real good…

Picture of the Week

It’s sad but anticipated news for tennis fans all around the world… Rafael Nadal is finishing up his tennis career after he plays for Spain in the Davis Cup finals next month. He says it was a difficult decision, but “in this life, everything has a beginning and an end.” He really has had a legendary career (and maybe a budding one as a philosopher?), which we’ve covered in a Shortcuts episode if you want to dive in.

Question of the week

What’s the most iconic ‘big thing’ in Australia?

It’s bananas v pineapples - a dispute for the ages… Australia’s catalogue of ‘big things’ is extensive, though, and here’s what Squizers had to say:

How could we leave off the Big Spud? - “Can't believe you guys left the Big Spud from Sassafras, Tasmania off the list! It is Tasmania I suppose, and they always get left of media lists…

So bad it’s good - “The Big Koala at Dadswells Bridge in Victoria is so bad, it's great. I used to have to travel past it frequently for work, and it makes me laugh every time.

Sweet memories from NSW’s Far North Coast - “Nothing like the memory of a chocolate-covered frozen banana on summer holidays in the 70s.

Squiz Recommends

Buying - These chopping boards from Marion Grasby’s CookDineHost. They’re made from recycled plastic, come in some really fun colours and make a great gift. Hint hint…

Listening - ABC’s You Don’t Know Me episode with Hamish Blake is a great listen. This podcast is all about getting to know beloved Aussies, and we enjoyed getting to know Hamish Blake a little more as he talks about his career, family and friends.

Watching - We’ve been getting into ESPN’s 30 for 30 series (on Kayo and Disney+), in particular this one on Lance Armstrong. It’s a 2-parter about doping to win 7 Tour de France titles after beating cancer and the massive fallout when he was caught. Made in 2020, it’s also his reflections on the people he screwed over while denying it… It’s gripping.

In the Kitchen

These buffalo wings are great to make at home - not just because they’re messy to eat in public... The recipe is the right mix of sweet and spicy. And don’t be scared off by the spice - we liberally added yoghurt to tone it down.

A breathtaking choice for thirsty skin

Skincare that looks good and works hard is non-negotiable. That’s why we want to introduce you to Very Luxe Face Cream, Go-To’s firming moisturiser made for people who demand more from their skincare. More science-backed solutions. More nourishment. More rose gold packaging. This plumping powerhouse is not your average moisturiser - it’s a serious contender in a seriously pricey category. $79 for clinically-proven* smoothing, hydrating results that are comparable (or better than) moisturisers that retail for $300 or more. In other words: it’s luxe skin for a third of the price. Find Very Luxe Face Cream (and skin) here.

*Based on a 12-week clinical trial of 33 participants.

It’s technical made simple - and you’ll be riffing on this big news story with the best of ‘em. Yeehaw… Watch or listen here.

The start of a new News Club interview series... Kate chats with Ben Smith, the founder of media startup Semafor/former media reporter for the New York Times.
