This week's top stories

As weeks go, it was a hefty one…

Streem Leading News Stories - 7-13 September

1. He said, she said - It was the first time former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris had ever met, and after a purposeful handshake, they were off. Looking across the pundits’ verdicts, more thought Harris won the night, but there are a lot of undecided voters who remain unconvinced. Someone who’s made up her mind is Taylor Swift, who came out for Harris via a post-debate Insta post.

2. Far from peaceful… - The Land Forces expo in Melbourne's CBD attracted anti-war demonstrations over 3 days - including ugly scenes where police were pelted with rocks, manure and bottles filled with acid. At its peak, authorities said about 1,200 people had taken part, many of whom sported Palestinian flags.

3. Are you old enough? - The Coalition promised it, the eSafety Commission recommended it, and Premier Peter Malinauskas of South Oz is ready to crack on with it… And then PM Anthony Albanese said the federal government will trial age verification for social media signups - details TBC

4. A big report is handed in - More than 3 years in the making, the Royal Commissioners handed in their 7-volume final report to the Governor-General, making 122 recommendations along the way. "Our sailors, soldiers and aviators deserve to receive the protection and support they need to thrive, grow and heal, both during their time in service and beyond," they said.

5. Shoring up aged care - These are once in a generation reforms”, the Albanese Government says… After getting the Coalition side, the headline is that self-funded retirees and many part pensioners entering the system will pay more. Still, the sector has widely welcomed it…

Picture of the Week

Taylor Swift cleaned up at Thursday night’s MTV Video Music Awards, taking home 7 moon men to take her career tally to 30. She now holds the record for the most VMAs ever won by a solo artist… Some people would say that’s greedy, others legendary…

Question of the week

Do you own a Country Women’s Association cookbook?

Well, of course. Nostalgic for some, a family staple for others, and irrelevant to a few - Squizers know what works for them…

An intergenerational connection - “I bought my own a few years back. Before that, I had my mum’s, which, as a member of the CWA, she had for many years. It finally fell to bits from use.”

Feeling nostalgic - “I inherited my mum’s which eventually fell apart and now is held together with a couple of elastic bands. I still sometimes look longingly at her footnotes and remember my favourites like her Anzac biscuits, lemon curd and rhubarb pie, but I rarely cook them myself these days.”

Burn… - “I'm not from that century, but I'm sure my mum or grandma owns one somewhere.”

Squiz Recommends

Listening - Glass by Michelle Andrews. She’s the co-host of the pop-culture podcast Shameless, but this podcast is a 3-part solo series about infertility. It’s a different style of podcast from her - and incredibly raw. And several Team Squiz members enjoyed listening to it - particularly the first episode.

Reading - Selena Gomez’s Vanity Fair profile gives you a glimpse into her many careers, how she’s learned to live with chronic illness, and how she’s going in the love department. She’s now said to be a billionaire, so something’s working for her…

Watching - If you’re looking for something to watch this weekend, The Perfect Couple on Netflix - based on the original novel by Elin Hilderbrand - is a good one. Across 6 episodes of about 45 minutes each, you’ll find Nicole Kidman leading a talented bunch (including the daughter of a very famous rock star…).

In the Kitchen

If you’ve ever needed a sign to make butter chicken at home - this is it. This recipe’s everything you look for in a restaurant version - spicy, saucy, and sweet. And once you’ve organised all your spices, it’s surprisingly easy to make. Pair it with naan bread, and you’re away…

Double-Tapping

This Fashion Critical Facebook post may begin with a story about a woman who was transported to her wedding via bus so she didn’t get ‘crutch whiskers’, but it ends up being about much more than that…
