🤷‍♀️ IDK: But it feels like the Royals were in a giving mood this week…

This week's top stories

What a great week for political and economics nerds. And sheep, as it turns out…

Streem (radio, print and TV mentions - 11 May to noon 17 May)

1. The numbers are in - And the battlelines for the next election are being drawn. On the Labor side, it’s all about bringing inflation down in the hope of a pre-vote interest rate drop. And for the Coalition, it’s about holding the government’s feet to the fire on how inflation tracks and the historically high rate of immigration during this term of government. Let the games begin…

2. Pro-Palestinian protests disrupt our universities - Students have occupied some buildings and disrupted classes on several campuses across the country. Some unis are now working with police to break things up.

3. A big week for Trump watchers - It’s been ‘get the popcorn’ stuff for many as Michael Cohen, Trump's former lawyer and fixer/current adversary, took the stand across this week in the presidential candidate’s trial over alleged hush-money payments to an adult film star. Here’s a quick explainer about Cohen’s connection to the case in case it’s handy.

4. The Russia-Ukraine war is back in the top 5… - That’s mostly because if you Google it, you’ll get a tonne of stuff on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to China to hang with President Xi. China is a big ally of Russia in its war effort, and Putin was there to ask for even more support.

5. Live sheep exports to be baa-nned - That was our headline on Monday when it was in the Squiz Today, and we’re just repeating it here because we were so chuffed with ourselves… Long story short, the export of live sheep by sea will end on 1 May 2028, and the industry isn’t happy about it. The Coalition has promised to overturn this plan if elected at the next election.

S’Quiz me real good…

Picture of the week

The first portrait of King Charles since his coronation last year has been unveiled - we're no art critics but the public did weigh in... Then came the announcement of a plan to unveil 150 previously unseen photos of the Royal family in a new exhibition at the King's Gallery… Whether Princess Kate’s had a go at ‘em with her photoshopping skills is yet to be declared (too soon?)…

Question of the week

What do you think about skinny jeans making a comeback?

If you’re someone who didn’t return to jeans post-COVID, we get it. There’s a reason why The Squiz was built while wearing trackie-dacks - comfort is king. As for some responses:

Simple as that - “Fashion smashion… I wear what I want to wear - fashion be damned!”

Decades of jeans - “I’ve been wearing jeans since the 60s and never had the desire nor the figure to wear skinny jeans! Loved flares in the 70s, my Amco Peaches in the 80s, maternity jeans in the 90s (even when not pregnant!), stretch jeans (comfy, not tight) in the 00s, and an eclectic mix ever since!”

And blissfully unaware - “I must've missed the memo that said they were out of fashion in the first place.”

Squiz Recommends

Reading - Since Baby Reindeer aired on Netflix, the real-life story has continued to play out… A main character was identified by internet sleuths, and then she made an appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored. If, like us, you’re left thinking about the turn of events, this piece by Marina Hyde in The Guardian is a good read.

Watching - Finding a good rom-com is like the search for a needle in a haystack. For some in the office, Anyone But You ticked all the boxes. You can now rent it on Apple TV.

Listening - Billie Eilish dropped her latest album HIT ME HARD AND SOFT yesterday, and one member of our crew says it might be their favourite Billie music yet. And the album artwork (aka the image below)… You can read about how it was captured in her latest Rolling Stone profile.

In the Kitchen

This fugazzeta cheese-stuffed pizza is delightful for themmm, cheese’ vibe... Set aside a bit of time for the dough to rise, but it’s worth it. Great for a casual supper with a nice glass of red.

Ohhhhh yeh…

What we Squized this week
