This week's top stories
Streem Leading News Stories - 26 October - noon 1 November
1. Getting to the pointy end of a presidential election campaign - It wasn’t on our bingo card that garbage would feature so heavily in the closing stages, nor that President Joe Biden would bite a child dressed as a chicken… Our best tip this weekend is to read/listen to our Squiz Shortcuts series, and you’ll kill it with your taking points next week.
2. G’day, Premier Crisafulli - Apart from the single-term Newman Government, Labor had been in power for almost 30 years in the Sunshine State... But now the Liberal National Party under David Crisafulli is in charge after winning last Saturday’s election with a majority. His new-look frontbench was unveiled yesterday.
3. A bumpy week over Qantas flight upgrades - It was the release of former Financial Review columnist and now best-selling author Joe Aston’s book The Chairman’s Lounge that got the questions firing at PM Anthony Albanese about his close relationship with former Qantas boss Alan Joyce. That sound you could hear were politicians across the board checking their declarations of freebies from the national carrier… PS: our News Club interview with Aston dropped this morning.
4. More talking about an end to the fighting in the Middle East - US officials have jetted into the region to further talks between Israel and Hamas+Hezbollah to bring a temporary stoppage to the fighting - they say good progress is being made…
5. An 11yo student is killed in a schoolyard crash - His name was Jack Davey, and the principal of Auburn South Primary School Marcus Wicher said they’d had a "wonderful and strong" response from the school community after the "complete tragedy". The 40yo driver of the car had just collected her child when she crashed through the fence, seriously injuring 4 other children.

Picture of the Week
Devastating flash flooding hit the southeast of Spain on Tuesday - it’s the worst flooding event they’ve had in decades. This image is from Valencia, one of the worst-hit areas, where water inundated villages and left cars piled onto each other.
Question of the week
What crime/mystery story did you keep up with this week?
One tonne is 1,000 kgs - just to give you some perspective on how much cheese 22 tonnes is - so we were hooked on that story too. As for what Squizers had to say:
A rodent with a motive? - “Police are on the lookout for a giant mouse…”
A rose by any other name would not smell as sweet - “I’m all about the dollarbucks reference and that the Taskforce is named Bandit.”
For good measure - “Did you hear about the guy who stole a truckload of Campbell's soup? I hear he's going away for M’m M’m good.”
Squiz Recommends
Reading - This article from The Cut written by Alice Feiring. It’s about her first-hand experience with the infamous 1970s New York serial killer Rodney Alcala and her decision to visit him in jail to find out why he spared her life all those years ago. The reason behind the timing of this article is that Anna Kendrick has just released Women of the Hour, which is based on Alcala. We reckon that’s one to check out too.
Listening - News Club host Kate Watson interviewed the founder of Semafor Ben Smith, and this week she’s recommending an episode from his podcast Mixed Signals. It’s about Fox News in this US election cycle, and they analyse its popularity despite going through some massive lawsuits.
Watching - We’ve devoured what’s out of the 7-part series Disclaimer on Apple TV. It stars Aussie actress Cate Blanchett along with Kevin Kline and Sacha Baron Cohen. It’s a psychological thriller about the past catching up with you… So good.
In the Kitchen
We’re mixing it up this week and giving you 2 side dishes/meal toppers that we’ve been enjoying. The first is mango salad - deliciously fresh, a little spicy, and goes perfectly as a taco dressing or with corn chips. The second is pickled onions - they’re great to have in the fridge to add on top of avo toast, tacos, salads, the works…
What we’re Squizin’
