20 July 2024 - Saturday Squiz

We’ve been Squizing for 7.5 years now, and we don’t think we’ve seen a news week like it. We kinda needed this guy to wake us up a couple of mornings… This Saturday, if there’s a trend you’ve jumped on, you’ve got a recipe that reminds you of your travels, or anything else you want to share, hit reply.

🤷‍♀️ IDK: Are we really letting Gen Z tell us what to wear?

This week's top stories

Extraordinary. Just an incredible week in news. And that’s before we get to the biggest IT outage the world has ever seen…

Streem (radio, print and TV mentions) - 13 July to noon 19 July

1. Living to tell the tale… - It’s been 40 years since anything like it… Donald Trump’s run-in with a grizzly end was averted by a chance head turn during a campaign rally last weekend. And as we hit the end of the week, the conversation turned once more to President Joe Biden and whether he will be the Democratic candidate come November…

2. A big union in a big messNine’s reporting started last weekend, and since then, heaps of accusations have been made against the CFMEU, particularly its construction arm and Victorian boss John Setka. Central to the claims is that he placed bikies and criminal figures in influential union posts, and nothing good came from that…

3. A good week for NSW - They overcame a 19-year voodoo to take out the State of Origin series in the decider against Queensland on Wednesday night. Blues winger Brian To’o was so excited he was still wearing his playing kit 16 hours after kick-off. Gross…

4. It’s not coming home - If wishing made it so for England in the 2024 Euro Championship final against Spain… It’s the world’s second-largest football tournament, and Spain won 2-1, taking out a record fourth title.

5. Pack away the Pimms… - The famed British tennis tournament is done and dusted for another year with Carlos Alcaraz taking the men’s singles title. He’s just 21yo and now has 4 grand slam trophies for his mantlepiece. For the women’s, congrats go to Barbora Krejčíková who scored her second big career win.

Picture of the week

A bit of a fashion trend emerged at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee this week…

Question of the week

How do you feel about King Charles and Queen Camilla visiting Australia?

We had a huge response from Squizers on this one… We asked where you think the Royal should visit, but a variety of off-topic responses flooded in…

Not for me… - “I find the pomp and pageantry infuriating and irrelevant. Still, I wish them well in their duty to foster their British traditions, but it’s rather nonsensical Down Under.”

The ball’s in your court, Royals… - “I'm interested but won't be lining the streets to get a glimpse of them. If they want to visit me at home, I'll bake a cake and dust off my best China for them.”

Can you plan our holidays too? - “Hamilton Island - I think Charles could use some sun and R&R after the past couple of years.”

Squiz Recommends

Reading - Republican vice presidential pick JD Vance shot to fame with his memoir Hillbilly Elegy. Critically acclaimed and a bestseller, it was written just before Trump’s first term, and Vance’s take on economic mobility and personal responsibility offers a peek into the rise of Trumpism. It was also made into a Netflix movie if that’s more your thing.

Buying - First we’ll take you through the new length rules for socks (thanks to Gen Z)… Ankle socks, no-show socks, and wearing no socks = out. What's in = crew-length socks. We bought these Uniqlo socks - $15 for 3 pairs - and instantly noticed that the looks of disdain from cool people have decreased…

Watching - The Simone Biles Rising doco series on Netflix. She’s the gymnastics GOAT who gave it up and came back to it just ahead of the Paris Olympics. Get this info behind you ahead of the Games - she’ll be a big deal in the coming fortnight.

In the Kitchen

The original Squiz recently returned from a holiday in Europe and said this Italian almond ricotta cake had her reminiscing. It’s quick, it’s delicious, and it might help you mentally escape from this cold weather…

What we Squized this week

A Weekly Wrap special edition on the week in US politics. Undeniably, this week has been huge for news out of the US. It started with an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump and then rolled into the Republican National Convention, where JD Vance was named his running mate. On top of that, the pressure remains on President Joe Biden to stand aside as the Democratic candidate. It’s been a lot… To help you (and us…) make sense of it, Claire and Kate have recorded a special podcast episode stepping through the events of the week. It’s 20 minutes well spent…
