This week’s top 5 news stories

Leading News Stories via Streem - 16 - 23 May
1. A quick trip to Splitsville - We’ve all had those couple-friends - relationship on the rocks, one of them goes rogue to blow it up… and then there’s the walk back… Since Nationals leader David Littleproud said on Tuesday that the party was out of the Coalition, it’s been an awkward tango with Liberal Party leader Sussan Ley…
2. A lot of action for little result - There was a glimmer of hope at the end of last week that ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas were back on, but they’ve come to nothing. That’s as Israel faces intense pressure over new military action in Gaza as aid is slowly trickling in after an 11-week total blockade.
3. Biden’s prostate prognosis - We heard last Sunday that former US President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an ‘aggressive’ form of prostate cancer, which has also spread to his bones. As one of the most common types of cancer among men, it’s a good idea to know the symptoms…
4. Floods hit NSW - At least 4 people have been killed, and almost 50,000 people were isolated due to the flooding caused by heavy rainfall across NSW’s Mid North Coast and Hunter regions. It’s been described as a once-in-500-year flooding event, and with more rain moving southward over the coming days, it’s not over yet. Stay safe out there...
5. Talking tanks in the Vatican - After attending the inaugural mass for Pope Leo XIV in the Vatican, PM Anthony Albanese met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to pledge Australia would do “whatever we can” to help in his country’s war against Russia. On that, we’ve promised to send old tanks to support the country’s war efforts, but they’re taking time, thanks to delays from the US.

Shot of the Week
When a truck tipped over spilling dye into a stream in Brazil last week, it was safe to say the driver really blue it… Local environment workers swooped in to save the affected birds and wildlife, but they were all left feeling blue…
Media literacy is coming to classrooms
This week, the national curriculum authority ACARA announced media literacy will be added to the school curriculum. Huzzah…
It means students from kindergarten to high school will be taught how to spot mis- and disinformation online as part of their regular lessons. And while that was a notable enough development in and of itself, the most exciting part from our point of view is that Squiz Kids’ free classroom resource Newshounds was recommended to teachers by ACARA.
So that’s us tooting our own horn. Now it’s up to you to check it out if you’re in that zone of primary school kids. Newshounds is now in 4,500 classrooms, so get on it. It’s free…

Squiz Recommends
Reading - Lonely Mouths - it’s the second novel by Jacqueline Maley, who is a writer for the Sydney Morning Herald. She usually writes about politics, but also has a knack for a cracking novel.
Watching - Couples Therapy on Paramount+. It was a timely find with the Coalition’s on-again off-again affair this week, and we reckon after picking up a skill or two that we’d make a pretty good counsellor…
Perusing - This article by The New York Times about Usher’s long road from writing to delivering a commencement speech at Emory University in Atlanta last week. We often wonder how some celebs get these gigs, but in this piece Usher proves he’s more than just an entertainer - he’s got a message.
Baby, that's a cracking idea...

In the Kitchen
Few desserts make such consistent crowd-pleasers as a good apple crumble, and with the abundance of apples in supermarkets at the moment, this recipe is a great way to make the best of what’s in season - or to get rid of those apples you bought last week and haven’t eaten. Add some hazelnuts if you’re feeling fancy, serve with a hefty scoop of vanilla ice cream and enjoy…

Australia’s civics crisis - Young Aussies’ understanding of civics and how democracy works is at a 20-year low, and with the growing mis- and disinformation out there, it’s got educators worried. We look at how programs like Newshounds are helping to bridge the gaps in understanding - read up on that here or listen to the podcast here.
Oscar Piastri’s ride to the top of F1 - There’s been heaps of buzz around the F1 driver/Melbourne boy - and for pretty good reason. He’s leading the world rankings coming into the Monaco Grand Prix this Sunday - and if he wins, he’ll be well on his way to taking out the World Championship. You can read about that here or listen to the podcast here.
