This week's top stories

The most clicked link from the Squiz Today newsletter this week was in a story on Princess Kate’s new portrait. After photogate earlier this year, we’re sure the Royals were happy it didn’t develop into a top news story this week…

Google Trends data - 19-24 May

1. Iran’s President dead - Seven others died in the helicopter crash on a foggy mountain in the nation’s north on Sunday that killed President Ebrahim Raisi. The nation’s top man it the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei - he led prayers at their funeral service in Tehran. If you’re feeling sure nerdy this weekend, this is a great read on what it might mean for the future of Iran.

2. A deadly bumpy flight - Let’s cover this one by the numbers… There were 211 passengers on the Singapore Airlines flight scheduled to fly from London to Singapore on Tuesday, including 56 Australians. After hitting turbulence and making an emergency landing in Bangkok, it was revealed more than 100 passengers suffered injuries, and British man Geoff Kitchen died from a heart attack. There are 22 people who remain in intensive care with spinal injuries, and 6 have brain and skull injuries.

3. A big football game in Melbourne - It wasn’t AFL or NRL… English Premier League sides Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspurs played at the MCG on Wednesday night. But all the attention came from Spurs coach Ange Postecoglou on his return to his hometown for the first time since 2019. The former Socceroos coach is a bit of a real-life Ted Lasso

4. Boxing gets a new heavyweight world champ - we didn’t cover this one, but Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk defeated Brit Tyson Fury in a points decision in Riyadh on Sunday. People who know about the sport said it was the biggest fight in a generation

5. That winning feeling - An Adelaide man won Thursday's $150 million Powerball jackpot, becoming Australia's biggest lottery winner. He came forward yesterday after a big Thursday night when he "just kept checking the ticket". Good for him. We’re not jealous at all…

Picture of the week

UK PM Rishi Sunak called an early election this week in front of 10 Downing St - as is tradition. Great, but it was in the pouring rain… We’ll see if he can ignite more than a damp response from voters by polling day on 4 July…

Question of the week

Which emoji do you find most confusing?

Oooh fancy - Getting glammed up for a catch up with you 💅, windy day 💨, and this one’s confusing I don’t get it, but I’ve used it… 🙃.”

We can see how you got there… - I thought it was a bunch of bananas... 💅.

Context goes a long way - “It could mean a fart, could be smoke, who knows… 💨. “

Squiz Recommends

Listening - The Boy in Water is a true crime podcast series from across the ditch. They say what happened is a true mystery but the telling of this story with all its twists and turns is what makes this a great listen.

Watching - There’s something about seeing the inside of a celebrity’s home that feels indulgent, and this Open Door Architectural Digest of Benny Blanco's home didn’t disappoint. Don’t blame us if you fall into the deep dark hole of celebrity home tours...

Reading -  We devoured this Reece Witherspoon article in the New York Times. It’s about how her production company and book club Hello Sunshine began and the role it’s played in surfacing female talent.

In the Kitchen

You know we love potatoes, so when this red Thai curry baked potato recipe subbed out the traditional rice for a roasted spud, we gave it a try. It’s hearty and delicious, and you can also sub the chicken for chickpeas if you want a veggie alternative…
