This week’s top 5 news stories

Leading News Stories via Streem - 23 - 30 May

1. No blue feelings for NSW - It might’ve been played on Queensland’s home turf, but it was all NSW in Game 1 of the men’s State of Origin on Wednesday night. After a decisive 18-6 take-down, it puts the NSW Blues in a good spot for back-to-back series wins and on par with the women’s team, after they took out their series trophy on Thursday night.

2. Tariffs on a yo-yo - US President Donald Trump faced a huge political setback on Thursday when a court ruled his ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs were illegal. It was short-lived because on Friday morning, an appeals court reinstated the tariffs while they wait for a new hearing. Long story short: it’s a check on the President’s power as he continues to make big changes

3. From joy to chaos - Over 75 people were injured on Tuesday after a car drove into a parade celebrating Liverpool FC’s Premier League win. Police have charged 53yo Paul Doyle with 6 counts relating to grievous bodily harm and one count of dangerous driving, and suspect he may’ve been drug-affected at the time.

4. Some aid gets to Gazans - After its 11-week blockade of all food, fuel and medicine, Israel cleared some aid trucks to enter, but it’s a drop in the bucket, and there’ve been huge problems with its distribution and US-backed facilitators. Leaders from the UK, France and Canada have threatened to impose sanctions to force an end to Israel’s military offensive.

5. Who’s in/who’s out - After smoothing the way for a new Coalition Agreement, Liberal Party leader Sussan Ley and the Nationals’ David Littleproud announced their frontbench. Some notable changes, including the dumping of Jane Hume and Sarah Henderson. That sparked questions about their commitment to ensuring more women are at the top of the decision-making tree.

Shot of the Week

The big 4 (no, not the banks…) made an appearance at the Roland-Garros French Open this week to honour Rafael Nadal’s legendary career. He’s won 14 titles on the stadium’s clay courts, and for reference, Sweden’s Bjorn Borg comes the closest to that title with 8 wins, back in the 80s…

Squiz Recommends

Listening - To this episode of Hard Fork, the science and technology podcast from the New York Times, which features Demis Hassabis, the chief executive of Google DeepMind. With Google’s recent unleashing of AI Mode for US users (which is coming our way and is set to change how we search online), the pod is a fascinating (and TBH slightly scary) listen.

Perusing - This article on Tatler spotlighting Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway - she’s coming to Sydney for uni this August and all security logistics aside, we can’t help but wonder how she’ll fare during her college stay…

Watching - Four Years Later on SBS On Demand - this rec comes from a Squizer, so thanks go to Dani. It’s a romance/drama series about a couple from India who are forced to live apart when one of them lands a job in Australia. We’re teeing it up this weekend.

Let your smile shine

Smiling is one of our favourite things to do, but it helps when your teeth are at their best. The Smilie Teeth Whitening Kit offers visible results from the first treatment without the hefty price tag, delivered straight to your door. It'll even lift long-lasting stains without causing your toothy-pegs pain. Find out more here.

In the Kitchen

Happy World Potato Day for yesterday to all who celebrate (aka surely everyone…) - this year we’re serving up a traditional Swedish potato and anchovy gratin that’s so good you’ll ‘accidentally’ eat the whole thing. This traditional Scandi dish is usually a Christmas classic meant to keep guests warm on their cold journey home, but you do you…

‘Jansson's Frestelse’ aka Jannson’s Temptation - they got that right…

What we Shortcut for you this week

Sussan Ley - The newly minted leader of the Liberals has taken on the challenge of rebuilding the party after the Coalition’s recent election defeat. We dive into her career in politics and what the job ahead of her looks like - read up on that here or listen to the podcast here.

How the factions work - As PM Anthony Albanese and the Liberals get stuck into organising themselves for this coming term, we asked you what you wanted to know - and many Squizers said they could use a better understanding of what factions are and their role in politics. You can read about that here or listen to the podcast here.
