31 August 2024 - Saturday Squiz

Did you do something silly this week? Take heart that it’s probably not at the level of this bloke who is on bail after stealing a 20kg gorilla statue from a nursing home in a rented ute from Bunnings and then texted a mate saying “LOL I stole a gorilla, so what?” This Saturday, if you’ve got a spring recipe, a Cool Britannia favourite, or anything else you want to tell us about, hit reply.

This week's top stories

Sport. Culture. Politics. Weather. This week had it all…

Google Trends - 24-30 August

1. The Paralympics are go… - The Games opened with another glistening showcase of Paris - and Australia’s para-athletes are already shining, with Tom Gallagher claiming our first gold with his win of the 50m S10 freestyle - 3 years after a near-death emergency at the Games in Tokyo. Overnight, Australia’s won 2 more gold medals taking us to sixth on the tally.

2. Getting to the pointy end of the footy season - The AFL is in focus this week because their rounds are over, with the Sydney Swans claiming the minor premiership, and next week, it moves into finals mode. And the AFLW kicked off this week with high hopes of a well-attended/viewed season.

3. Next year is gonna be the year that Oasis is gonna reform… - Much to the relief of fans who will now scramble for a ticket to their 2025 shows in the UK and Ireland. As the warring brothers know, when millions of dollars are on offer, sometimes you’ve gotta roll with it

4. Blowin’ a gale - Poor Victoria… Hailstones the size of golf balls - tick. Winds of 150km/h - tick. Big parts of the state really copped it this week.

5. The Country-Liberal Party makes a big comeback - Going into last Saturday’s election, a swing against the Labor-led government in the Northern Territory was predicted, but not of the scale that was delivered. Say hello to the nation’s newest leader Lia Finnociario (who is in charge of 20 ministerial portfolios right now…)

Picture of the Year

Scott Portelli has won the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year. He’s from Western Oz, and he used a drone to capture this image of 2 humpback whales feeding in Antarctic waters. Amazing stuff…

Question of the week

Oasis is reuniting…

Given the hype, we wanted to know if you got excited. Apparently not…

Get this man some tickets - “My husband has already planned a trip to Manchester before even securing a ticket to this gig…”

Cynic - “Call me a cynic, but I think this is all about money for the Gallagher brothers.”

A different generation… - “Nah. But as a 27yo female, I'm patiently waiting for One Direction to reunite to their former glory.”

Squiz Recommends

Watching - This one is a bit more of a serious recommendation. It’s ABC’s Four Corners episode from this week called The Big War. It’s about Iran, its support of Hezbollah and Hamas, and how it would be positioned in a broader war in the Middle East. Good stuff to know.

Buying - These Skipper cleaning products. It may seem like a bit of an upfront cost, but we reckon the value is there. Our favourites are the laundry sheets, hand soap and universal cleaner. Spring cleaning must be in the air...

Reading - Timing is a factor in high-profile divorces, and this article from Vanity Fair delves into it with J.Lo and Ben Affleck’s split, as well as some others.

In the Kitchen

We were hit by the change in temperature this week, so we made this fresh Panzanella salad, and then we got to enjoy the leftovers on toast, bruschetta style. It's safe to say we’re getting excited about springtime fruit and veg…

Upping your at-home game

Hommey make your home a place to get comfy, and their new pinstripe collection of robes, hair wraps and towels are an elevated take on the classic design. If you want that sense that you have it all under control (even if you're fakin' it 'til you make it...) because you're organised with great out-of-the-shower items, you'll find that across 6 new colours. Explore the bathroom collection’s enduring style at gethommey.com

What we Squized this week

Newsmakers episode with Leigh Sales. This week, we chatted with Leigh Sales about everything from her time anchoring ABC TV’s 7.30 to her writings on grief and the podtastic Chat 10 Looks 3. It’s safe to say that this chat was a big moment for us, and we reckon you'll enjoy it. Watch the interview on YouTube.

PS. Next week we’re interviewing Dr Karl for News Club. Got questions for him? Send ‘em our way…
