This week's top stories

So far this year, one woman has been killed every 4 days in gender-motivated violent attacks. Between rallies and a National Cabinet, it dominated the news this week.

Streem (radio, print and TV mentions - 27 April to noon 3 May)

1. Australia has a crisis on its hands - At least 28 women have died, allegedly at the hands of male violence, so far this year. On Wednesday at a National Cabinet PM Anthony Albanese called it a ‘national crisis’ and announced $925 million in funding measures to support people escaping domestic violence and to combat online misogyny.

2. Bonza goes bust - Regional airline Bonza went into voluntary administration this week after all flights were grounded on Tuesday morning, leaving hundreds of people stranded. With news that staff won’t be paid for April and confirmation that the fleet will stay grounded until early next week, it’s a story that could kick on for a while.

3. King Charles returned to duties - It was all smiles from King Charles as he got back out and about this week, visiting a cancer treatment centre with his wife Queen Camilla. He’ll mark one year on the throne this Monday. Coronation quiche, anyone?

4. Protests across US college campuses - More than 2000 people have been arrested in the last few weeks as protests over the war in Gaza break out at college campuses. This week it’s put domestic pressure on US President Joe Biden as he tries to walk a line between supporting students’ right to protest while condemning lawlessness and anti-semitism. Meanwhile, protest encampments are beginning to pop up at universities across Australia.

5. Boots on the ground in the NT - PM Anthony Albanese was in Alice Springs to “listen to local people” 2 weeks after a youth curfew aimed at curbing violence ended. $22 million in extra funding was also announced this week - $8 million for public school infrastructure and $14.2 million to “deliver policing and other community safety support in Alice Springs.”

Question of the week

How do you feel about show/movie/book spoilers?

Contrary to this clear poll winner, Squiz HQ was split down the middle on spoiler-seekers vs. avoiders. As always, we got a full range of opinions in the comments…

Best of both worlds, really - “If you tell me, I'm likely to forget anyway and still get a surprise!”

Unequivocally anti-spoiler - “Ruins the experience 100%.”

Alll the spoilers - “I absolutely love a spoiler! To the point I’ll google it until I find it… and it’s not just limited to movies - I also read the end of a book before the start.”

Squiz Recommends

Reading - This Vanity Fair profile on Chris Hemsworth. He’s on the publicity trail for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which comes out later this month. He’s nearly unrecognisable in the role - prosthetic nose, brown eyes, nasally voice. He talks family, Marvel movies, and the career highlight that was working with director George Miller.

Buying - The weather’s getting cooler, our toes are getting colder and we’re treating ourselves to a new pair of these slippers after wearing out our old pair.

Watching - The First Monday in May on Prime Video. It’s a doco on the 2015 Met Gala (which brought us this major Rihanna fashion moment). Lots of Anna Wintour, lots of fashion, and lots of us getting our judgy-pants ready for the Met Gala red carpet this week.

In the Kitchen

This jerk chicken recipe is all about the marinade, so factor in some time to let the chicken sit and get all delicious. If heat isn’t your thing, halve the amount of chilli - you won’t miss out on the flavour but the kick will be less.

BBQ perfection…
