This week's top stories

It’s been news at pace this week... Since late yesterday, China has whacked retaliatory tariffs on US products, South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol has been permanently removed from office, and Russell Brand has been charged with various offences against 4 women. The top 5 stories from the week are:

Streem Leading News Stories - 29 March - 4 April

1. Say ‘tariffs’ one more time… - After a week where it seemed to be every second word, US President Donald Trump has unleashed his new set of tariffs onto the global economy. Australia came away relatively unscathed because we import more from the US than we export, but we were hit with the baseline 10% - but other countries weren’t so lucky…

2. Myanmar’s worst earthquake in a century - Last Friday, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the city of Mandalay and sent shockwaves into neighbouring Thailand. To date, over 3,000 people have been killed, with a forecast of unseasonable rain likely to hinder further rescue efforts.

3. That’s a wrap on week one of the election campaign… - Let’s hear some applause for that achievement... It was a dizzying week in international politics, and PM Anthony Albanese’s tumble resembled that of international markets… Coalition leader Peter Dutton made some moving plans. And now they’re gearing up for the first debate at the People’s Forum on Tuesday night via Western Sydney. Good luck for week 2…

4. It’s the supermarkets, stupid - With the cost of living a hot-button election topic, the Labor Party have promised to ban price gouging and break up the supermarkets. This comes after the ACCC’s report a couple of weeks ago found the retailers had healthy profit margins - but something to note is the regulator found no evidence of price gouging.

5. A mother is charged with attempted murder - We didn’t cover this, but it was a big one in Sydney this week. A 47yo mother in Baulkham Hills has been charged with the attempted murder of her 3 children aged between 10-16yo after they were found with stab wounds on Monday.

Shot of the Week

Ever the showman, President Trump appeared alongside a big ol’ chart to announce his slew of new tariffs on all imports to the US. The chart - it’s more like a blackboard, really - listed the country-specific reciprocal tariffs that will cover everywhere from Cambodia to some uninhabited islands off the coast of Antarctica… You can’t say he’s not thorough…

Squiz Recommends

Watching - The Pitt on Binge. We’re not usually medical drama fiends, but we’ve devoured this show this week. The acting talent is first class, and the format is what hooks you in - each episode, which goes for an hour, is an hour of the shift in the emergency room of a large/under-pressure hospital in Pittsburgh, America. Five stars, Margaret…

Listening - To Ezra Klein’s interview with Jonathan Haidt, social psychologist and author of The Anxious Generation. The episode explores Haidt’s research into how social media is changing our brain patterns and the impact on childhood. We know it’s a heavy topic, but if the show Adolescence stuck with you, it’s a great deep dive with a good dose of hope.

A splashy deal

Keeping your pool clean and clear might not be the most exciting task, so these deals from Aiper could be handy to free up some of time... Right now, you can save as much as $900 on their intelligent pool robots, which will help you keep your pool spiffy for swimming all year round - but with way less effort. Check out the range of discounts on offer - but don't leave it too long, as they'll be ending soon. Head to Aiper's website or Amazon before 6 April if you're keen to snag a saving.

In the Kitchen

We came across this recipe on social media - but it’s not the creation of some random influencer. Bon Appetit is a mainstay publication of the American food scene, and their post about a no-fail/no-fuss focaccia was too good to pass over. We tried it, and it’s a winner. Just make sure you give it heaps of time to do its thing.

What we Shortcut for you this week

Setting the scene for the Aussie federal election - Over the coming weeks, we're going to prod and probe the big issues and policies, and to start with, this episode seeks to help you understand what the Albanese Labor Government needs to do to hang onto power and what it will take to get the Coalition over the line. You can read up on that here or listen to the podcast here.

Myanmar’s civil war - A major earthquake has struck Myanmar, but as rescuers try to reach people in the rubble, the military continued to carry out airstrikes against pro-democracy groups (although a ceasefire has now been declared…) in a civil war that started in 2021. You can read more here or listen to the podcast here.

Double-Tapping

Mel Robbins is huge on the podcast and social media scene right now with her ‘Let Them’ self-help ethos. On her show recently, she had Dr Stacy Sims, who’s a bit of a guru for older women on staying active/eating enough protein. And it’s the latter part of that couplet that went viral where Sims told Robbins about how she slams down 30g of protein first thing in her morning coffee. Here, she explains how it’s done - bon app…
