Streem Leading News Stories - 1-7 February
1. You get a tariff, and you get a tariff, and you get a tariff… - The only reason this is ahead of the next story on the list is that it’s been around a few days longer. Last weekend, US President Donald Trump confirmed an election promise to put a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican exports - but that’s been postponed for a bit. Goods from China, which already face various rates of duties, will face an additional 10% tariff. Did someone say trade war?
2. “The Riviera of the Middle East” - As one report said: “President Donald Trump’s unprecedented announcement that he was planning to seize control of the Gaza Strip and oust 2.2 million Palestinians, temporarily at least, has provoked shock and disbelief around the world”. This BBC explainer on the practicalities is worth a look…
3. Sam Kerr on trial - This week in a London courtroom, we heard the Matildas captain say that calling a police officer “stupid and white” was a result of her view that he was inappropriately using his position of power to hold her after a night out went off the rails. Her team will sum up on Monday, and then it’s over to the jury to decide…
4. Rain, rain, go away… - More rain for Townsville and that part of far North Queensland over the last day and into this weekend has put exhausted locals back on alert. Since last weekend, rain records have been broken across 8 local council areas.
5. Aussie police not on the Laos methanol poisoning investigation - The offer was given, but Deputy PM Richard Marles this week confirmed our investigators have not been brought in. Aussies Bianca Jones and Holly Bowles, along with 4 other foreign nationals, died after drinking alcoholic drinks containing methanol in Laos. The government there has promised to "bring the perpetrators to justice".
