This week's top stories

Lots going on this week across a variety of issues, so it was hard to pull out the biggest news story of the week. So instead, we changed it up this week, looking at the biggest names making news. And what a sausage fest it was…

Google Trends data - 1-7 June

1. Michael Mosley goes missing - The TV presenter known for championing the 5:2 and Fast 800 diets has gone missing while on hols on the Greek island of Symi. He went on a lone hike on Wednesday, and it’s possible he was on a path that’s considered dangerous, so there are concerns for his safety.

2. The Demon goes far, but not deep - Kudos to our top-ranked male tennis player Alex de Minaur. He made it into his second Grand Slam tournament semi-final, making him the first Aussie to do that at the French Open in 20 years. But that’s where his run ended…

3. A familiar voice falls quiet - Radio and TV personality John Blackman died this week at 76yo - it follows a skin cancer diagnosis in 2019. Aussies of a certain age will remember him as the iconic voiceover guy for Hey Hey It's Saturday.

4. A case of hope over experience… - Media magnate Rupert Murdoch married Russian native/molecular scientist Elena Zhukova this week. It’s his fifth marriage and her second - her ex is Russian-born/British-based oil billionaire Alexander Zhukov. Quite liked her dress

5. Former federal Liberal treasurers in the news… - Coming in with 10,000 searches a piece are Peter Costello and Josh Frydenberg. The former for crashing through Canberra Airport, the latter for deciding not to crash through in his former seat of Kooyong…

S’Quiz me real good…

Reckon you know who tennis player Alex de Minaur’s mentor is? Have a crack at the Squiz Quiz.

Picture of the week

King Charles and Queen Camilla were both a bit teary during the D-Day commemoration in Normandy, France on Thursday. The 80th anniversary of the commencement of Operation Overlord - the push by the Allies to beat Nazi Germany, ending WWII in Europe - saw 20 world leaders and heads of state attend. For his part, the King said: “As we give thanks for all those who gave so much to win the victory, whose fruits we still enjoy to this day, let us once again commit ourselves always to remember, cherish and honour those who served that day and to live up to the freedom they died for by balancing rights with civic responsibilities…”

Question of the week

We had a bit of a whoopsie this week when we told you Cold Chisel tickets went on sale on Wednesday - turns out they went on sale on Tuesday... Soz about that…

Good to know we’re not alone though. Along with a whole lot of missed flights, there were some cracking responses from Squizers…

Hindsight’s always 20/20 - Ended in a very nasty divorce…

They were unprecedented times… - “I don’t need to get any home office stuff, this COVID thing will be over in a week (me, pre-dodgy back, shoulders, neck…).”

We hope there were vacancies - “Arrived at a hotel only to find I had the right date but the wrong year! Accidentally booked a year in advance.”

Squiz Recommends

Listening - Last week, Donald Trump was found guilty of 34 counts of fraud in a New York court… But that doesn’t stop him from running for the US presidency in 2024. Naturally, we have questions - and this The Daily: How Trump’s Conviction Could Reshape the Election podcast did a good job rounding out what could happen…

Reading - British fashion designer Erdem Moralıoğlu has a new exhibition Imaginary Conversations opening on 22 June in Chatsworth, England. It feels unlikely that we’ll see that one in the flesh, so this Financial Times article is second best - especially because it’s full of some pretty speccy photos.

Watching - As Olympic fever starts to take hold, The Boys in the Boat based on the true story of how the underdog US rowing team triumphed at the 1936 Olympics - warmed our hearts. It’s directed by George Clooney, stars Aussie actor Joel Edgerton, and it’s streaming now on Prime Video.

In the Kitchen

Fennel’s in season and it’s great in pasta, so this fennel pasta recipe was a big yes for us. It’s one of those recipes where a few simple ingredients go a really long way.

What we Squized this week

Your Shortcut to D-Day - When it comes to telling the story of WWII, D-Day is one of the biggies, and 6 June was the 80th anniversary of that momentous day. So in this Shortcut, we get you across the lead-up to D-Day, how it played out, and how it changed the course of World War II. Have a read or a listen here.

Squiz Kids Shortcut on social media - Did you know our sibling Squiz Kids also does a weekly shortcut? Given the recent news surrounding social media and children, we thought we would share this episode with you. This Squiz Kids Shortcut takes you through how long it’s been around, why people love it so much, and what we should be careful of when using it. Get it in your ears on Apple or Spotify.

Squiz the Week

Saturday - Rectifying a slight (double-whammy) mistake from last week - this Saturday the Australian Kelpie Muster is on in Casterton, Victoria. Good luck if you’re trying to find in NSW, as we suggested 🤷🏻‍♀️. It’s also National Bestie Day and National Gin Day, so maybe clink a G&T with your mate

Sunday - If you’re a cricket-mad early bird you can catch the Aus v England T20 World Cup match live on Prime at 3am

Monday - It’s the King's Birthday public holiday for most of the country (but not for you, Western Oz and Queensland…). And eyes will be on the pool this week as the 2024 Australian Swimming Trials for the Olympics and Paralympics begin

Tuesday - The Queensland 2024-25 budget will be handed down. And the final game of the second Round FIFA World Cup qualifier between Aus and Palestine kicks off at 10.05pm, live on 10Play

Wednesday - It’s Russia’s National Day and Independence Day in the Philippines

Thursday - For the data nerds and those with a keen eye on the economy - the Bureau of Stats will update our employment numbers

Friday - It’s World Blood Donor Day, so if you’ve been thinking of rolling up your sleeve to help save lives, consider this a nudge.
