This week’s top 5 news stories

The week’s most mentioned news stories in Australia across TV, radio and print, according to media analytics firm Streem.

Leading News Stories via Streem - 2-8 May

1. So, what’s happening in the Strait this week? - Great question… Project Freedom (America’s plan to escort ships through the Strait) started on Monday and was then paused as the US and Iran exchanged fire in the Strait on Thursday night and Friday morning. But the ceasefire is sort/kinda still in effect, so what happens next on moving this on is anyone’s guess…

2. More details on the sad life of Kumanjayi Little Baby - We found out that 6 child protection reports were filed before her abduction and death last week. An investigation is underway, and 3 people were stood down (with 2 since reinstated) from the Northern Territory’s Department of Children and Families… Thousands of Aussies gathered at vigils held across the country on Thursday, where her mother urged “everyone to take care of your little ones”.

3. Murder in Sydney’s southwest - We didn’t cover this one, but police were called to a home where a mother, father and son had been killed and another son was injured early Sunday morning. The alleged attacker - the third son of the family - has been arrested.

4. One journey ends, another begins - Four women and their kids from Islamic State-linked families returned to Australia from Syria on Thursday night. Three of the women were arrested on arrival - 2 were charged with offences related to slavery, and one with terror-related charges. The slavery charges are unprecedented in Oz, so there’ll be lots of eyes on it.

5. Reserve is the word - The Albanese Government announced 2 initiatives to shore up our fuel supply this week… Next week’s Budget will include an increase in Australia’s petrol stockpile to 37 days and the diesel and jet fuel supply to around 50 days (which is a lot more than we had…). And gas producers in Oz will need to start reserving 20% of their export volume, but it doesn’t apply to export deals already done.

Portrait of the week

Squiz Recommends

Listening - To Charli xcx’s brand new rock song (like released yesterday brand new), aptly named Rock Music… The brain behind Brat has pivoted genres from dance pop to rock, and it’s delightfully 2000s, a bit angsty - it’s definitely joining the playlist rotation.

Reading - Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy, which is about a family living alone on a remote island. It’s loosely based on the subantarctic Macquarie Island (which sits between New Zealand and Antarctica), which has a research station on it. There’s mystery and love story and a little bit of climate change polemic backdrop but we finished it in one sitting on a long plane flight…

Wearing - This trackie set from Assembly Label. It’s comfy, and totes appropes for a coffee/supermarket stop. Ugg boots optional…

In the Kitchen

French toast casserole, anyone? It is seriously delicious and v easy - including the fact that can make it the night before. Caramelised pieces of soft brioche warm from the oven, yum…
