This week's top stories

Streem Leading News Stories - 2 November - noon 8 November

1. Now, about the US presidential election… - It was the only game in town around the world this week… You know the headlines - former President Donald Trump has become President-Elect of the United States. And if you still have some appetite for it and saw how Trump’s campaign manager Susie Wilkes didn’t enjoy the spotlight during his victory speech, she’s set to be his White House chief-of-staff

2. A diamond in the roughie - Knight’s Choice - the 5yo gelding considered a distant outside chance of winning Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup - galloped home for glory in an epic photo finish. The winning Irish-born jockey Robbie Dolan was overcome with emotion - he was recorded saying "Jesus Christ" over and over again in the moments after the finish. Maybe it was divine intervention…

3. Yoav Gallant is given the heave-ho… - The popular Defence Minister/former military leader had been at odds with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu for a while. Gallant’s support for drafting ultra-Orthodox Jewish men into the military - a move opposed by the key religious parties in Netanyahu's coalition - is said to be the last straw.

4. Interest rates stay put… - The US, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and Europe have cut ‘em - but not here… The Reserve Bank this week again kept its official cash rate where it is, and says underlying inflation is still too high.

5. …but there’s some relief for those with a HECS debt - You’ll be able to earn more before starting to repay the debts - and debts will be reduced by 20%. The Albanese Government reckons the changes will not be inflationary as the debt reduction would occur over a long period, but the Coalition says that’s not the case. Did someone say there’s a cost of living election around the corner?

Question of the week

Making a home in space…

Some pretty smart NSW high schoolers are sending algae into space in the name of science. They say it may even help Mars become livable, so we wanted to know if Squizers were up for relocation…

Priorities… - “I'd only live on Mars if cats could come too.”

Don’t be ridiculous - “It wasn’t so long ago that people would never consider leaving the cities for our regional areas - and they are some of the most beautiful parts of Australia. Mars? Forget it…”

Up for an adventure - “I reckon it would be amazing to be a pioneer - what an opportunity. As long as I had a good book or 2 - I could be there a while.”

Squiz Recommends

Listening - Unmade’s podcast with Four Pillars Gin co-founder Matt Jones. It’s about how he and his 2 partners built it from the ground up to make it the success it’s become. Inspiring…

Downloading - Have you ever stared down the aisle of a wine cellar and thought “how on earth am I going to pick?” We recently got onto Vivino, a crowdsourced app, where you scan a wine bottle label to see what others rated it - and you can rate it yourself. It’s helpful for picking a good one on the spot.

Watching - Martha on Netflix. It’s a documentary on her origin story and her career - and the massive ups and downs. She’s one tough cookie - unless we’re talking of her baked varieties, and then they’re exactly as delicious as she would want them to be…

In the Kitchen

Brown butter is the best - actually, all butter is the best, but let’s not get caught up on technicalities… These brown butter choc chip cookies are heaps good. Adding the salt flakes once baked might seem like an insignificant step, but it’s a must.

Raising a glass to easy gifting

Finding the time to buy pressies for your holiday party hosts can be tricky. But Naked Wines can help… They're an online wine merchant that curates the best independent Aussie and Kiwi wines and sends them to your door. If you want to sort out your gifts in one go this year (or stock up yourself…), Naked Wines is offering $100 off your first case of 12 bottles. All that’s left is to choose the menu to pair ‘em with...
